The Republicans and Evangelicals are constantly accusing LGBTQ of "grooming" children. Yet every day on @Threads, I see articles about cis-males sexually assaulting children or in possession of pictures of others assaulting them. Kristen Browde, a parent, lawyer, activist and out transgender woman, collected data on 10,885 cases between February 10, 2023 and May 23, 2014, discarded 4205 cases that did not provide details of the person involved and charted the remainder. Those statistics do not surprise me. Sadly you are highly likely to be sexually assaulted by a member of your family.

DeleteSad but true: Predators follow their prey. It's always upsetting to realize that in professions that we (want to) trust, there will be those who entered that profession just to get easy access to victims. Sigh.

DeleteI worked Sex Crimes Bureau for Years at one of the biggest DA's Offices in the Nation, those stats are quite accurate. The professions with easiest access to the most vulnerable will always have a higher percentile of Predators seeking their Prey. And, Religious institutions are notoriously high in attracting Pervs, the more Extreme the Religion, the higher number of abuses. I can't say I ever, in all those Years, had a known Drag Queen who was a Molester of Children or Rapist of even an Adult Victim. Sadly, in Sex Crimes, most Victims are underaged and not Adults, which was a big shock to me when I got into Criminal Justice as a Career. I guess I thought the Average Victim demographic would be an Adult Female.
ReplyDeleteI personally know two women who were raped at 14 by senior ministers in the church I used to attend. And know of a third. I have no idea how much the organization has paid out over teh years to settle sexual abuse cases. Legal age of consent is 16 unless coercion is involved eg teacher, etc.

DeleteThe advantage of. no sex education for educators is not only are their victims ignorant , but the rest of the student body is also naive. I can't speak for the teachers at my school who being adult should have been aware.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher in my grade5-8 classroom(yes,small school) openly molested the 13 yr old student who he would have sit on his lap while he marked papers at his desk. I was a naive 9 yr old but could still tell something wasn't right.
For the next 20 yrs he moved from small school to small school across rural sk agreeing to move on in return for a clean reference.
When he moved back to our community yrs later he had not changed but his undoing was that the mentally challenged 13 yr old he was grooming was not bound by the same sense of shame that he had effectively used to escape punishment. When she injudiciously spoke the truth, people had a long enough memory to connect the dots!
So do not count on a rural background - a sexual education class is a necessity - no matter how much students aware of animal biology should know-no matter how much fire and brimstone is doled out weekly at the local church

Age appropriate sex education needs to begin in KIndergarten with the correct names for genetailia and the concept of consent. Conservatives hate this as it reduces their oportunities for grooming children. People will always pass the problem on rather than deal with it as your teacher example illustrates.
