Children have rights; parents have responsibilities

Moe has passed his anti-trans Bill 137 using the not-withstanding clause in the Canadian Bill of Rights to over rife the UN Bill of Children's Rights, the Canadian Bill of Rights and Saskatchewan's own bill of rights. Bill 137 forces teachers to out trans students under the age of 16 to their parents and get their consent before using the child's preferred name and pronouns.

This legislation is borrowed from American Red States and is a response to losing a by election to Nadine Wilson, leader of far right Saskatchewan United Party. He was influenced by Nadine Ness of Unified Grassroots, a rabid anti-vax organization responsible for Saskatchewan dropping all Covid-19 preventative measures, resulting in a linear increase in deaths reaching 2000 om July. Action4Canada, led by Tanya Gaw, claims they also influenced the legislation. Moe claims none of them influenced him, he consulted with parents and experts. Court of Kings Bench Justice Megaw, ordering a stay on the legislation, says there was no evidence of any consultation.

The legislation requires teachers to get written permission from parents of children under 16 before using their preferred name and pronouns. Often children will try out social transitioning at school before telling their parents. And if they deem it unsafe, they will never tell them. That is the parents fault.

The legislation also requires schools to stop using third party material or speakers in their sexual health class and only use government approved.

There is also a clause holding the Saskatchewan government harmless if the legislation causes any harm.

The Parents' Bill of Rights outlines a number of different rights that parents have regarding their children's education. In fact parents have always had the opportunity to do these things. The supporters of course never go to parent-teacher interviews, home and school meetings, or volunteer in the school. We did all of that with our four kids, knew their teachers, volunteered, and were active participants in their education.

Two items are pure BS.

1. act as the primary decision-maker with respect to the pupil's education.

This is from the Red Stated where teachers are grossly underpaid and disrespected and students rank at or near the bottom in education.

2. if sexual health content is to be presented to pupils in the school, the parents must be notified at least two weeks in advance and can withdraw their students with written notice.

Some people are terrified that their children will not inherent their bigotry towards 2SLGBTQ+ or even find out they exist and have the same rights as everyone else.

The organization marching in support of this, such as Action4Canada, which you must join to access their website, and the Million March 4 Children in its various commutations are hate groups comprised of Freedom Convoy, anti-vaxxers, anti 2SLGBTQ+ groups, and far right religious (evangelical) organizations. They deliberately conflate Social Transitioning and Physical Transitioning to inflame their base. They have no interest in the children and often use misleading advertising for their meetings. They wish to maintain the patriarchy and destroy everything that threatens it.

My youngest daughter is a teacher and Chief Librarian in a middle-high school in North London. She is THE trusted ally and spends her day talking to kids, doing here work on holidays, weekends and after school. Many kids have come out to her, including Muslim kids. She has won awards for her activities in leading the Diversity Group at her school. She knows where of she speaks and is sickened by this lagislation.

The following organizations protested to the Saskatchewan Government about the dangers of the Parents' Rights Bill:

Saskatchewan NDP, Saskatchewan Federation of Labour, Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation, Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission (Kuttai resigned), Saskatchewan's Children's Advocate, CUPE, U of R Faculty Association, Egale Canada, 14 law professors of the U of S Faculty of Law, and others.

It is a point of pride with supporters of Moe's legislation that these people, who might know what they are talking about, were ignored. Moe claims parents are the experts when it comes to knowing what is best for their children.

Now that is a crock if there ever was one. Parents are amateurs at raising kids. There is no instruction manual, every family, every child is vastly different. We depend on what we learned or did not learn from our parents, on advice we got from trusted sources, on experience as we go along. We use this information as the best we can and we are often wrong but we keep on trying. Teachers spend more time with our kids than we give them credit for and their opinions should be listened to. Parent teacher interviews are priceless in that regard.

The PEAK has a good article explaining SOGI 123. Link is here.

SOGI 123 teachings discourage gender-specific stereotypes, help explain different family structures, and are proactive around transitioning students. Furthermore, they encourage children to ask questions and engage in proactive allyship.

A parent, who was present at the 1 Million March 4 Children on September 20 in support of the SOGI 123 curriculum, shared their insight to Global News: “I feel sorry for the children of those parents that choose fear over the reality that teaching our children about sexuality protects them, it protects them from sexual predators actually, it allows them to be empowered in their ability.”

So you want to move to Canada?

The last few weeks I have been preoccupied with defending the soldiers of the Waffen SS Galicia Division who emigrated to Canada in and around 1950. Following that I was fighting with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to extend Tanya's work permit for one year. Yesterday the website crashed so I gave it up. Tanya and I took Lucky for a walk which was far more enjoyable.

IRCC websites are badly organized, immensely complicated and explanations are missing or difficult to find. Contacting a human being is impossible. There is a number but don't even bother. There is an emergency email which might be answered in two weeks or simply ignored. One easily draws the conclusion that the staff of IRCC do NOT want people moving to Canada,

So for those of you from USA who are thinking about it, start now to work your way through the on-line bureaucracy or contract professionals. Progressives and MAGAts threaten to move here if the vote doesn't go their way. Saskatchewan has gone from a socialist province that cared about its people to a far right fake-Christian province in the past 15 years both provincially and federally. Alberta has mellowed considerably with  strong NDP opposition both provincially and federally. Manitoba just elected a First Nations Premier and NDP government. So pick your destination carefully.

The big fuss is "parents' rights" especially in Saskatchewan. It is a coalition of antivaxxers, Trudeau haters, evangelical Christians and out right conspiracy believers. They thrive on hatred of the 2SLGBTQAI+ community and can be violent. The things they believe kids are taught in the schools is pretty wild. They want SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) taken right out of the curriculum. They claim they need to know what is going on in the schools and what kids are being taught and that they have a right to know if their kids come out to their teachers.

Many of them don't even have kids in school. Most have never been to a parent teacher interview and none of them have actually taken the time to volunteer at a school or ask about the curriculum. All of which they can do at any time. None of them care that if Trans kids come out to their teachers but not their parents it is because they know it is not safe to do so. And THAT is the parents fault.

If some of the "parents' rights" groups had their way the 2SLGBTQAI+ would all be rounded up and put to death, based on threats that have been made.

Yaroslav Hunka and the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, Part 2

 Part 1 is here.

The population of Canada after the Second World War was 12-15 million, including one million Ukrainians, who emigrated to Canada from the displaced persons camps. The goal of these new Ukrainians was to establish themselves as Canadians and fight the communist regime to free their Ukrainian brothers. The Committee of Ukrainians of Canada united several dozen Ukrainian organizations who worked hard at spreading the word about their community and the situation in Ukraine SSR, debunking Soviet propaganda.

The Soviet Union, specifically the KGB, the Soviet Secret Police launched Operation Payback sometime in the late 1970s. They were concerned with the cooperation between Ukrainian dissidents and human rights activists inside the Soviet Union and Jewish Refusniks. The combination of those two groups of dissidents and human rights activists inside the Soviet Union if supported by the Ukrainian, Baltic, and Jewish diasporas could cause them problems. Operation Payback had two goals.

1.      The primary goal was to divide Ukrainians and Jews spreading accusations that the Galicia Division murdered Jews.

2.      Dividing Ukrainians and Poles by claiming that the Galicia Division was responsible for ethnic cleansing of Poles was a secondary goal.

The Soviets viewed all anti-communist Ukrainians as Nazi Banderites, followers of Stepan Bandera and the OUN (National Organization of Ukraine). OUN's goal was to drive out occupying powers and set up an independent Ukraine. OUN accepted violence as a political tool against enemies of their cause. The military wing of the OUN , the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) fought as partisans against the Poles, the Nazis, and the Soviets. Some units were involved in killing Jews, others had Jewish members. The UPA was very active in ethnic cleansing of Poles (and the Polish Home Army in killing Ukrainians), killing some 50,000 to 100,000. The last of the UPA were destroyed by the NKVD in the early 1950s. Polish-Ukrainian relations have been strained over this ever since, with no agreement.

KGB memo on Operation Payback

The KGB began inserting what we would today call fake news stories into the Western media, circulating leaflets and films, planting stories in newspapers. For example, the number of imaginary criminal Nazis grew to as many as 6000. The whole intention was to raise this question of thousands of Nazis or alleged Nazis hiding in North America. Jews in North America rallied to weed out these villains in our midst. That provoked a struggle between the Jewish communities and principally the Ukraine diasporas.

Operation Payback was highly successful The Ukrainian Diaspora had to halt their attacks on the Soviet Union and concentrate on defending themselves. Pressure from the Canadian public, in particular the Jewish communities forced the government to investigate. And the lies and misinformation continue to circulate.

The Royal Commission on War Criminals in Canada, headed by Jules Deschenes, began in February 1985 under PM Brian Mulroney. The work of the commission was based on the principles of the Nuremberg Tribunal. The Deschene Commission compiled a list of persons who were accused of possibly committing war crimes — a total of 883 people. In addition to Ukrainians, the list included Hungarians, Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians and representatives of other nationalities.

Of the 217 divisionists who were challenged by the Wiesenthal Center before the Canadian government, 187 had never been to Canada, 11 died in Canada, two left for another country, 16 had no evidence of war crimes, one had no information of any kind.

The Deschenes Commission report was released in 1987. Of 966-pages, eleven of them were devoted to Waffen SS divisionists. The first part of the report dealt with making it easier to deport war criminals. In the second part of the report, the Commission reached several important conclusions:

  1. 1.      There is no reason to accuse the Waffen-SS division "Galichyna" of crimes against humanity and war crimes, as before entering Canada, former divisionists were thoroughly checked twice, once in Italy, once in Britain.
  2. 2.      In the absence of evidence of the commission of specific war crimes, membership in the division itself is not sufficient for prosecution
  3. 3.      There can be no prosecutions for the purpose of depriving members of the Waffen-SS Galicia division of Canadian citizenship or deporting them.

It is unknown whether Yaroslav Gunka was on the list of the Deschenes Commission. Since they were guilty of nothing they had been accused of, surnames were noted in the secret part of the report, which has not yet been declassified to the public.

Dr. Lubomyr Luciuk, Professor at the Royal Military College of Canada, (interview link in the References Part 3) had just moved to Toronto after finishing up his PhD at the University of Alberta in 1984. His dissertation was on the post War II immigration of Ukrainians to Canada, the so-called displaced persons or DPS including Veterans of the Division, so he was very well informed. He'd studied the archives; interviewed veterans of the Division and many other refugees who came to this country after the Second World War.

During the Commission’s investigations, Dr. Luciuk worked with The Civil Liberties Commission, which was associated with, but independent of, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. Some of Dr. Luciuk’s comments about the Deschenes Commission are in the following two paragraphs (not verbatim).

The principal position of the Civil Liberties Commission was, and remains, that the concerns of the Canadian Jewish Congress are understood. No one wants any war criminals in Canada. If there is credible evidence that a person committed a war crime or a crime against humanity, put that before the authorities, let the authorities review it, and determine if that person should be brought to trial and if so in a Canadian criminal court of law.

All these grossly exaggerated figures that were banded about were dismissed by Deschenes Commission. The reality is virtually all the cases that he looked at were submitted by individuals who provided no evidence at all. They would denounce people, they'd name people, they'd say we read it in a newspaper published somewhere in Eastern Europe. Many of the cases were, “This man was a veteran of the Galicia division, although there's nothing against him personally.” We'd get anonymous tips. Deschenes would investigate them and, in some cases, he'd go to the person who said, “Well, that guy is a Nazi.” “What is your evidence?” “I don't have any, I just think so”.

The Speaker of the House made an innocent and unfortunate mistake, took responsibility for it, and resigned. The furor, now international, is continually fed by the Kremlin propaganda machine. It benefits no one but Putin. Yet Russia needs to be continually reminded that it was the Molotov-Ribbentrop Agreement and Soviet support for the Nazis that allowed Hitler to begin the war.

Mr. Yaroslav Hunka and the other members of the Waffen SS Galicia Division, living and dead, who immigrated to Canada, were and remain, Ukrainian Patriots and Heroes.

Yaroslav Hunka and the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, Part 1

Yaroslav Hunka front center.
Yaroslav Hunka, Peter Savaryn, and any other members of the Waffen-SS in Canada are Ukrainian Patriots and Heroes for fighting the Communists on the Eastern Front during the Second World War.

According to a CBC transcription of the recorded speech, The Speaker of the House Mr. Anthony Rota, introduced Yaroslav Hunka as follows:
We have here in the chamber today, Ukrainian-Canadians, Ukrainian-Canadian war veteran from the Second World War who fought the Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today, even at his age of 98. He's a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service. Thank you.

That was a terrible, misworded and in many ways false introduction. Yaroslav Hunka was not a Ukrainian-Canadian during the war, nor is he, in any way, shape, or form, a Canadian war hero. Yet the gasps of horror and frantic clutching of pearls that have occurred since Mr. Hunka was introduced, missed the key errors in the introduction and focused only on the "Nazi" and are primarily a result of ignorance or twisting of history.

Russian anti-Ukrainian propaganda, beginning in the 1970s, intensifying in the early 1980s and continuing today, has been swallowed whole and constantly repeated, including by reputable Media, who did not fact check. Combined with the fearsome lobbying power of Jewish organizations such as the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, B'nai Brith, Jewish Defense League, and Anti-Defamation League, these lies and half-truths have served to embarrass Canada and smear honourable men. Putin is laughing at his success.

Even media reports that attempted some balance deferred to the Jewish perspective at the end because they knew they would be smeared as Nazi sympathizers if they did not.

If you do nothing else, please listen to this 12-minute radio interview with Dr. Henry Abramson, Dean at Touro University in Brooklyn and a specialist in the history of the Jews of Ukraine This is the clearest repudiation of the Nazi label on Hunka, Savaryn, and every Canadian citizen who served in the Waffen-SS Galichyna/Ukrainian Division. https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2269612099736

The Cyrillic letter Г is pronounced and transliterated H in Ukrainian and G in Russian. Hunka may be printed as Gunka or Galicia as Halicia in some articles. Members of the Galicia or Galichyna/Galychyna (Halicia or Halichyna/Halychyna) Division are referred to as divisionists and in translations from Ukrainian language articles as officers.

The Schutzstaffel or SS was divided into two parts, Allgemeine-SS ("general SS") and the Waffen-SS (“armed SS”). The Allgemeine-SS was responsible for the Einsatzgruppen (the death squads responsible for the “final solution”), and the Schutzmannschaft (collaborationist native policemen serving in areas of the Soviet Union and the Baltics occupied by Germany, of which there were about 71 Ukrainian battalions).

Actual membership in the SS under Heinrich Himmler was limited to those who could prove Aryan descent. They swore an oath of personal loyalty to Hitler. I swear to you, Adolf Hitler, as Führer and Chancellor of the German Reich, that I will be loyal and brave. I pledge obedience unto death to you and those you appoint to lead. So help me God.

The international divisions of the Waffen SS did not swear allegiance directly to Adolf Hitler as did the German SS. Initially, they swore the same oath as all the other foreign divisions. "I swear to fight Communism under the leadership of Adolf Hitler as Supreme Commander-in-Chief." In Mid-1944, it was changed to "I swear under the guidance of Adolf Hitler as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief to fight for Ukraine, for its liberation from the Bolsheviks."

Note: Every member of the German military swore an oath to Hitler: Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, Deutsche Marine, SS. So are they all Nazis and should every Canadian and American who was in the German military be treated like Yaroslav Hunka?

The Waffen-SS were originally elite Nazi military divisions such as the Totenkopf or “Death’s Head” division whose leaders were tried and executed for war crimes. However, from 1943 onwards as they were losing the war and needed manpower, divisions were created that included non-German and Slavic peoples. For example, in parallel with "Galichyna", the Germans formed divisions from Latvians, Bosnians, and Estonian units. Russians, such as “Kaminski’s Brigade", also fought in the Waffen-SS, as the 29th volunteer division of the SS troops Waffen-Sturm-Brigade RONA, in June 1944. and "distinguished itself" during the suppression of Warsaw Uprising.

The governor of Galicia, Otto Vechter created Waffen-SS Galichyna Division in April of 1943. Thousands joined the Galichyna Division because they hated the Bolsheviks, having been occupied from 1939 to 1941. Motivation of Ukrainians was primarily to protect their country from the Bolsheviks, and the hope that creation of a national Ukrainian army could potentially work for the creation of a Ukrainian state with support from the Allies.

The Ukrainians immediately went to German military training camps and officer academies. Several hundred Ukrainians graduated from these military academies. The division could not have participate in punitive operations in 1943 or early 1944 for the simple reason that it was undergoing military training in Germany.

Their first major action, in support of the German army was the Battle of Brody which took place in Lviv Oblast in July 1944. Several German divisions, including Galichyna were heavily outnumbered and surrounded by the Red Army. Fewer than 5,000 of the Galichyna divisionists managed to escape to Neuhammer (now Świętoszów in Poland) where they had been trained initially.

Germany decided to restore the division. Galicians had three choices: go to Germany as workers, dig trenches at the front lines, or join the Galichyna Division and fight the Communists. About three or four thousand people were trained, this time including many from Soviet Ukraine. In November 1944, the division was officially renamed the 14th Volunteer Division of the SS "Ukrainian No. 1".

It was in the summer of 1943 that Yaroslav Hunka joined the Division at the age of 18. He could vividly recall the terror of Soviet occupation from September 1939 to July 1942. “The NKVD had eyes and ears everywhere. Friend to friend and brother to brother could not speak sincerely for fear of betrayal. . . In 1943 the German Army was retreating West. The thought that the Soviet ‘beasts in human form” would be returning drove us into action. At the call of the OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists), many joined the ranks of the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army). Others, at the call of the Ukrainian Central Committee, went as volunteers to the "Galichyna" division”.

As the German Army was driven west, the Galichyna, now Ukrainian, division continued to fight communists. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians had fled the Bolsheviks to Slovakia so volunteers from the division went there to fight the Communist partisans, and also in the Balkans for the same reason. On the last day of the war, about 10,000 members of the Galichyna/Ukrainian Division, now calling themselves First Ukrainian National Army, surrendered to the British at Graz.

They were sent to a camp in Northern Italy while the British figured out what to do with them. At the Yalta Conference in February of 1945, Roosevelt and Churchill had agreed with Stalin to repatriate all citizens of the Soviet Union. The divisionists saving grace was that in September 1, 1939. Galicia was not part of the USSR. And they protected as many as possible of their colleagues from Soviet Ukraine by claiming they were in fact from Galicia.

After two years in Italy, some 10,000 divisionists went to Britain where they were held for another two years in various camps. The British understood that these people were not Nazis. They were conscientious people who sided with Hitler to defeat Stalin. After 1948 they gradually dispersed, with a large number going to Canada including Yaroslav Hunka, some to USA, some to Australia while some stayed in Britain.

How Countries Solve Problems

My apologies for being so long between posts. I am working on a post that is requiring a great deal of literature review to get the details right. In the mean time, a little light hearted (?) humour. How America, China, and Europe solve problems. I am embarrassed to admit I had to look up several of these flags. I have listed them in order to save you the trouble.

Germany, USA, Russia, China, Britain, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Romania
