I remarked on this to a good friend, a leather craftsman, who took over his father's shoe repair shop and who introduced me to the music of Diana Krall. I said, "How can she walk in those things?"
He told me that one day a very tall, very lovely young woman came into the shop with a pair of heels to be mended. He asked her the same question, "How can you walk in those things?"
She said, "I don't. I go into a lounge and trade shoes out of my handbag. then I dangle one off my toe and wait to see who buys me a drink". I gather the line formed on the left.

(A bit of trivia: Apparently she lives 'just down the road a piece' from our new place here on the west coast... if by 'a piece' you mean about 20 miles.)
