Blogging has taken a back seat for a while. I needed to get my annual Christmas letter written and distributed. Also my ADHD doesnt help me concentrate (I got fired at the orange juice factory). So if I havent been to visit your blog lately, it isnt that I don't care. Some days coping is difficult.
My running joke is that my cognative dissonance is caused by sitting under my SAD lamp reading the news from USA and Ukraine. Second, not so funny, is that I have this feeling there is a hole in the bag and the marbles are falling out. That is scary.
My oldest daughter took me to a Geriatrician to see how many marbles I have left. She looks after me. The girls had noticed for some time that my short term memory was giving me some trouble, espcially since moving from Regina where everything was familiar to Saskatoon where very little was familiar. Dealing with paperwork such as Tanya's EI and PR/Visa documents were getting more difficult and I tended to shut down until I took a break and came back in the morning.
After a thorough four hour grilling including the Montreal Cognative Assessment on which I did slightly better than Trump. I at least knew what the animals were but could only remember 4 of 5 words. Daisy would not stick.

My Geriatrician concluded I have Mild Cognative Impairment and gave me a list of things to do to improve or at least reduce decline. Key was get out of the house and find a useful purpose. Hours doom scrolling on the computer was not so helpful. So I am volunteering at the Western Devlopment Museum. I've attended the introductory volunteer course and want to take the caring for artifacts course which is needed even to dust displays.
There is a community woodworking shop where I can go and see what is there. I used to love woodworking but have neither tools nor place to work so this could be fun. The Museum has a working blacksmith shop with a volunteer blacksmith who looks the part. They have a harnes sshop but no one doing leeather work or even keeping the leather clean and oiled. I want to find a course that will teach me enough to at least be able to emboss belts.
I need a new Western belt anyhow. Since walking Lucky nd reducing intake in my old age, I shed 25 kg and wear a 2X shirt now and 42" jeans. Be proud of me for that. My belt is way too long.
Christmas is coming but it doesnt feel very holiday seasony. We do have lights up as my oldest daughter dug them out of the shed and strung them up. Our 3-block street is very nicely lit up at night. Tanya wants to roast a duck for Christmas so we need to track one down at our grocery store.

To all my loyal readers, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Solstice , Season's Greetings and Happy Holidays. My wish for all of you is a happy, peaceful 2026

I can share your dismay at being in possession of an ever decreasing stock of marbles. But hey, it seems you are shepherding those you have left quite effectively.
ReplyDeleteOne of my sisters-in-law was head of the Saskatchewan Alzheimer association and she was quite willing to give anyone she knew a test so when my nurse practitioner whipped out the test I was all prepared-but oops, when shown the picture of the Rhinoceros, my mind was taken over by the old Xmas song "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas " and I blew that one.
After my seizure they gave me the test again-expecting me to name all the words I could name starting with " F". That was one that left me tongue tied as soon as I started. Reminded me of Obama's aid that lost half his vocabulary the day he lost his middle finger !
Well, keep it between the ditches as they say and we are busy waiting for your next posting-especially liked you miscellany you posted recently
Blair
I lost marks on the F words too. And a couple other places. couldn't draw a cube for sour apples. Final 27/30. Foxtrot Tango Delta
DeleteSome days I feel like a couple of my marbles have rolled out of the old Crown Royal bag too. But I'm really glad to hear you're going to stop doom scrolling. I'm sure that alone will make a difference in your life. And YES to getting out of the house, doing something fun and/or useful, meeting new people, putting some spice back in life! Good for you! Enjoy the festive season with Tanya and your girls!
ReplyDeleteThank you Debra. I subscribe to @Threads and while I enjoy the many positive posts, I take great pleasure in blocking MAGAts, bigots, anti-trans, anti-immigrant and any other Richard Craniums I come across. Many are bots with 0 to 10 followers but sometimes i get one with over 100 and once with over 700 followers.
DeleteI need to get writing as that I enjoy and I have a book to write.
I enjoyed catching up. Were I to take a cognitive test, I suspect that I would do about as you did.
ReplyDeleteThe picture I posted is the standard one. Get someone to administer it with you. You would do quite well I think.
DeleteLosing marbles is a scary thought. I'm glad you got some constructive suggestions on how to... um. I was going to say "Keep your marble sack full", but that just made me think of your last post about Lucky's surgery. Perhaps I'll say instead, "Stay bright and engaged." ;-) Your activity choices sound great, and I'm sure you'll feel better for reducing doom-scrolling and increasing your fun levels.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas!
Thanks, Diane. I shall do everything in my power to stay bright and engaged. Tomorow it may even be warm enough to walk Lucky again. It has been -30C with windchill for the past several days
DeleteI've read that one of the best ways to slow cognitive decline is to learn new things, so getting out, meeting new people and trying out potential hobbies sounds like a great strategy to me. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, your loved ones and Lucky too!
ReplyDeleteThank you, tundra Bunny. I will sure work on it. Merry christmas to yuo and yours too. Stay warm. That was quite a rainstorm you had. Hoe no one you know what injured.
DeleteLove ya, dad.
ReplyDeleteLove you too, son
DeleteI'm so sorry. I hear you about the ADHD. Hope we will be hearing from you in 2026. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dora. You have a good Christmas and New Year too.
DeleteI'm so sorry you are dealing with what we all deal with eventually, some cognitive glitching. I have Adult ADHD too and I'm Bipolar and OCD, so my Kiddos all joke that if I get Dementia, they won't know the difference, coz nothing will appear different. Symptoms are rather similar, I must say. *Bwahahahahahah*
ReplyDeleteI hear you. I often think the same. How will they tell? Hope you had a good Christmas. Happy New Year.
