A Busy Week

On Wednesday my wife left me and my son and his partner presented me with my first grandchild with my name.

Tanya has gone back to Ukraine for maybe three months. She will find someone she knows to rent the house just for the utilities or she will close it down for the winter. We hope she can bring our German Shepherd back with her but it will be difficult as he is a big dog. She flew into Warsaw and took a bus to L'viv. Three hours at the Polish Immigration and at least three hours at Ukrainian Immigration. She was still there when I talked to her at 3 am my time. She said there were buses and cars from all over Europe lined up at the border filled with Ukrainians going home. From L'viv to home by train but which one?

Grayden Hingston was born in Edmonton about 7 pm Wednesday night, 7 lbs 3 oz 49 cm. Tanya was in Calgary long enough to get the pictures and details. He has two middle names after his grandfathers which is always good politics. He has a sister and brother in early teens and his other grandparents live nearby so they can spoil him regularly. My plan is to teach him to drink beer, swear, and eat pickles.

Three days old and happy he kept his mother awake all night his first night home

I am cleaning house today and doing laundry as my youngest arrives on Sunday. Haven't seen her for three years. She is in Canada for three weeks so am glad to spend a couple days with her.

  1. A very busy week. Welcome to Grayden Hingston. I hope that Tanya is safely home now. And that she can come back to you in three months time. How lovely to see your youngest again after a long gap too.

    1. Thank you. I hope to go see him in mid August. Tanya will get home Sunday afternoon. Long trip when we used to fly into Kyiv and take the train. I will worry until she is home.

    1. It is so awesome. Little mutt is proud of himself for some reason, likely for keeping his mother awake

  3. Tundra Bunny here... Congratulations on your new grandson -- he's a bright spot in these times! I hope Tanya's trip back to Ukraine goes well and that she and your dog return safely to Canada. Enjoy the rest of our Saskatchewan summer and your daughter's visit too... GO GAINER!

    1. Thank you. I hope all goes well with Tanya's trip. The Riders need a boost too from the looks of it

  4. Allen, it’s good to hear from you. Congrats on the new grandson, and I know you will find ways to spoil him….beer, pickles, etc. I hope it’s safe enough for Tanya to return. And I’ll cross fingers that she’ll find a way to bring Lucky back with her.

    1. If things heat up she will grab the dog and head west but I am fairly sure she will be OK. I just hope she doesn't wear herself out trying to clean up the flower beds and so forth all at once.

  5. Wow, that has been a busy time! Congratulations on your namesake - his eyes and mouth remind me of you in that photo. I'm sure he'll welcome your wisdom regarding swearing, beer, and pickles. ;-)

It must be difficult for Tanya to go back and see all the changes there. I hope she has a good visit and a safe return.

    1. Nose and smile are like mine, poor kid. Tanya will be home tomorrow afternoon, all things being equal. I will stop worrying when she is home. Yes, the town will have changed dramatically and I am sure everything else too.

  7. Well, good that Tanya is able to get back and take care of the house plans for winter. Your new grandson is adorable -- look at that smile! With you as his tutor, he'll be drinking beer, swearing, and eating pickles in no time, I'm sure. Enjoy your time with your daughter!

    1. He is a cutie. Do kids usually smile that young?
His father was flirting with the nurses in the hospital shortly after he was born but he was 11 lbs plus. The nurses said that he smiled very young

    1. Thank you. The Vietnamese side of the family are convinced he looks like them. Which is totally fair.

  9. Congratulations on the very handsome new namesake! He'll be a handful if he turns out as smart as he is cute.
Hope Tanya's trip goes without too many hiccups or delays, and that puppy can accompany her back.

    1. Thank you. I expect he will be very clever. Like his parents. He will be smarter than all of us

  10. Three months apart! I know you must hate that--I hate it when Peggy is gone for even a week, which is sometimes that happens about twice a year (as for me, I'm never gone for more than three hours, and wish I could avoid even that. If I prayed, I would certainly be praying for you to be reunited with your dog.

    The baby is lovely.
