Russian Travel Guide TV

We got out satellite dish retuned the other day and now have several new channels.  Tonight we were watching a documentary channel called Russian Travel Guide TV.  There is also a Russian variant.

The home page give instructions for satellite pick up and it also says that many European cables are carrying it now.  I am sure if you know how you can get it on your computer but don't ask me how to do that.  There are lots of YouTube type clips to watch too but haven't checked that out yet.

You could spend the rest of your life in Russia and never run out of new things to see in whatever category you like - palaces, old churches and museums, historical sites (Borodino, for example), breathtaking scenery; adventure stuff like hiking, rafting, climbing; animal or bird watching.  For those of you who would love to visit this beautiful country but can't afford the time or money, this is the next best thing.  We watched tonight about the Russian bears on Kamchatka salmon fishing during a spawning run.  (And while one was eating a big salmon Tanya said "Save some for me").  These bears are big bruisers.  Near relatives to the Alaskan Kodaks

Kamchatka is on our list of places to visit.  I think it will be cheaper to fly there from Vancouver than from Kyiv so we may do an around the world ticket sometime.

  1. Oh it sounds like it would be an amazin' trip. I take my tours here on the web 'cause ya just can't leave the critters on a workin' farm like the Ponderosa.

God bless ya and have an amazin' day my friend!!!

  2. A lot of history and geography to Russia. Very complex country.

  3. The Iron Curtain was more than a metaphor. It was also a physical curtain. It effectively removed the largest country in the World from our experience for what? 75 years or so? And now that it has been lifted, it is as if the World is discovering a land it really did not know existed.

Fascinating country. Believe it or not, it is the only European country I am even mildy interested in visiting. But it will have to wait until I have been to New Zealand.

  4. One of the most well-done nature programs I've seen is "Wild Russia." I had no idea Russia had so much diversity and breath-taking scenery -- much of it hardly accessible. Gorgeous.

  5. Russia truly is a huge country with a huge history and geography. It wasn't just the Iron Curtain that kept people out of Russia. Throughout history they tended to be a bit Xenophobic and under several Tsars, travel out of Russia was forbidden.
The distances in Russia which most Europeans simply cannot comprehend were also a major factor in keeping people from traveling far. Most thought it was a long way to Moscow, (including Charles, Napoleon and Hitler). Moscow is just the beginning of the trip.
